Personal Statement
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I thought I'd give it a shot. When you all started writing your personal statements, how did you determine what you were going to write about? I've tried reading books on how to write a personal statement, but after reading 6 books filled with examples, I still have no idea what to write about. At first I thought I would write about the 6 months that I spent in Israel after college, where I lived on a kibbutz and participated in a program called Kibbutz Ulpan. While participating in the program, I spent 3 days each week studying Hebrew and 3 days each week working, first as a janitor at the kibbutz's amusement park, and later in the dining hall; I also spent a week in the army in a program called Gadna. I thought that writing about some aspect of my time in Israel would make for interesting and entertaining personal statement, but 1) I don't want it to sound like a travel log, and 2) I have no idea what to focus on or where to go with the story. I also considered writing about losing my mom to cancer (she died in May 2008), but 1) I'm not sure that's a very unique topic, and 2) I'm afraid that that topic would be more about mom than it would be about me. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am at a complete loss as to where to go with my statement, and if anyone can give me some good advice, it would be you guys. Thanks in advance! |

Currently Applying
Hello Everyone. I am currently in the process of applying to law school. I have about 7 schools that I intend on applying to. Both my LSAT score and GPA are at or above, mostly above, the median if not 75th percentile for these schools. Still, every time I go to fill out the applications or work on my personal statement I freak myself out and quit. I know my scores are good enough to get into law school, but all of the other factors which I have more control over (my personal statement and resume) I feel as though I'm going to mess it up and ruin my chances. All I hear about it how difficult it is to get into law school and even though I know I am qualified, I still doubt myself. Did anyone else have this feeling, or can I quit doubting myself and be reasonably confident that I will be accepted to at least ONE school? I know some may be thinking that if I can't handle the stress of applying to these schools I'll never make it through law school, but once I get an acceptance letter I'll be fine. There's just so much riding on these applications! |

Not your usual post...slightly OT?
This is somewhat OT, so if you feel it needs to be deleted let me know. I'm hoping someone here will have some input. I'm not the recent new grad - my husband is. My husband is a new lawyer, just graduated in may, bar in july, found out he passed in October and started his first job 11/2. For Christmas, I'd like to get him a PDA and load it with legal resources. I think that would be a good, lawyery-tool and he would have fun with it. But I did a really good of being in denial when he was in law school, and have managed to make myself completely clueless about what kind of resources he could need or want on a PDA. So, current law students and recent grads - what would YOU find helpful? Y'all are probably a lot more in the know than I am. Any input would be sincerely appreciated. |

Letters of Recomendation
I applied to law school in 2005 and didn't make the cut, so I have decided to try again since everything I have accomplished is more impressive now. However, there is one problem. My best LOR is from the dept. head of my major and she also happens to be a graduate of the law school I am applying to. She wrote me a WONDERFUL letter in 2005 and since then she is MIA. Can I use this LOR this time around too or does that look bad? Current Mood: determined |

Preview of ABC's "The Deep End"
A new show about BigLaw... sourceI'm not sure I could ever watch this show because of the fact I'm in law school... and I worked in a BigLaw firm for two years and this just not how things operate. Just like my Mom can't stand things that happen on medical shows because she's a nurse. Everything in BigLaw is a lot more subtle -- if someone is sleeping with another staff member, it's not out in the open like that. And partners don't say things like, "I'm litigation partner, so I'll do what I want" - it's more a silent power struggle. But since that doesn't make good television, I knowww. I hate how in the intro they have the characters explain they want to change the world. You're not going to f-in do that in biglaw, get a grip. I also hate how all the shows about practicing law are all about biglaw, and there's none about public interest law. I know I'm biased but I think that would make a great show. I hate it when everyone assumes that because I am going to be a lawyer I'm going to make a lot of money -- NOT THE CASE. And it's so awkward to have to explain that I'm actually going to be a very poor lawyer. They struggle to even believe this... Anyways the best thing about this I think is Tina Majorino is a major character! She was the little girl in Waterworld, Corina Corina, When a Man Loves a Woman. Her IMDB profile is here. She's playing the Addy Fischer character. Of course, Above the Law has their own thoughts, mainly stemming from the fact that Billy Zane's character should be overweight. |

Vegas Trip
So sorry to crash, so before I completely make a fool out of myself, does anyone want to point me in the right direction of a website or a person who can help me plan my first Vegas vacation? ( If you think you want to help and aren't annoyed by me, click here! )There was some sort of Las Vegas visitors community but it looked inactive. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. (And if you're planning a trip to Atlanta anytime soon I'd be happy to help pick out some fun things to do and places to go!) |

Being bilingual!
As of this semester, I'm done with the required language courses for my major, but I want to be bilingual (eventually), do you think it makes much of a difference for getting into law school/getting a job after law school, if I learn a language through college courses and they see it on my transcript? I feel like I could perform better in other courses without having to spend endless hours studying spanish for college credit when I could learn it independently. Thank you all for the umpteenth time! |

Split Summer
Has anyone ever done a split summer? How many weeks did you work at each location? What's the minimum you think one could get away with? Thanks! edit: I'm a public interest person - so this isn't for a firm, it's for a non-profit :) Also I have an offer and they said I can do a split summer but we would just need to iron out details. |

ARGH.
Dear Supreme Court, Rule 8 was so very nice and clear for decades. The Conley standard was great, and made 12(b)(6) motions easy(ish) too. Why did you have to go and screw it up with Twombley? Why!? No love, A frustrated 1L |

T-mobile service
Hi everyone! I was just wondering if any one who has T-mobile service with either the Samsung Gravity 2 or Samsung Highlight phone could tell me the pros/cons of the phone and how their relative service/reception is around Vegas... particularly Henderson & UNLV. I have T-mobile right now and my service for the most part is pretty good, but while reading reviews for the two prior mentioned phones, some people were complaining about the call quality and inability to achieve good reception with the new phone even though their old phone had great reception around their area... =/ I do not plan on getting a data plan and I don't send more than 400 texts a month. Anyways, this post is really just to see if you all can help me decide which phone I really want to get haha. I'd love to hear reviews from those who actually have/had the phone and are living in Vegas. Thanks in advance for any input! :) ~ Vickie |

Doctor issues
Hey there! My google-fu is failing me & I'm wondering if any of you guys can guide me. I've read that one of the docs that I use has open medical malpractice cases against him. I've received questionable care from him too, but am curious what the other cases are. Is there a way for me to find out? Would this be open information? |
